Kidsmith Association
      Of America
Commited to helping young kids get
      into the art of blacksmithing

Hello, and welcome to the KAOA! We are a growing blacksmith organization and we are here to try to offer some help to other kids
that are interested in learning this wonderful craft. We
hope that you will enjoy browsing our site and that we will
be of some little assistance to you.

                                                    Our Goal

We are a strictly non-profit organization that is striving
to help young smiths get better every day. Our members
consist of a wide variety of kids that have an even wider variety of hobbies including reenactors, professionals, backyarders, and much more.
We hope that you will share your forging stories, pictures, and
questions with us. Our primary object is to offer advice to young
people on a level that they can understand and by people that are in
their own age group. Enjoy!

Hi! My name is Dave Custer and I am the founder and president of the KAOA. First, thank you for visiting our website.
I have been forging for about 1 1/2 years, and besides 2 lessons, I am completely self-taught. Our vise president, Brandon, said it perfectly, "We are ALL learning." I started smithing simply because of the joy of making things with my own two hands. Knowing that you have the skill to create artistically designed objects from a piece of steel is, in my opinion, one of the best of feelings. It's like planting a garden and harvesting the vegetables. You can do it for 40 years, and it will be just as exciting as the first time.

Other than a blacksmith, I am a Civil War reenactor, historian, and official drummer boy of the Confederacy. I am also a sword enthusiast, farmer, and a mandolinist.

The kidsmith,

Dave Custer.

Hello and welcome to The KAOA.

I started blacksmithing in May 2008. I started off of sheer knowledge from Youtube and IForgeIron.com. From there I built a small forge made from brick, from there i got a bag of charcoal and had a 20 pound lump of steel that served as an anvil. From there I bought a 110 pound Vulcan and made a better forge that worked 10 times better. I still do not have a shop ,but a setup in my yard. When I move I will at least have a steel shed. I enjoy blacksmithing because i can take an old rusty piece of steel and make something with my own 2 hands!!
I can do all kinds of work and I learn new stuff everyday thanks to the folks at IForgeIron. I highly suggest if you want to get started in blacksmithing you start there.
Other than blacksmithing i enjoy woodworking and having fun!
